At this point, my inherent love (*cough* obsession *cough*) of Kylie Jenner’s makeup line shouldn’t really come as a surprise.
Her formulas are exquisite, and her colours are both unique and very very wearable.
Although I basically stan her matte liquid lipsticks, I have shockingly never tried her traditional lippy formula (the shame). So when I saw her new birthday collection, I figured there was no better time than now to contribute to Stormi’s college fund*.
*Shoutout to Mikaela Long for creating this joke, because I’m not very funny.
This is the first order I’ve made from Kylie Cosmetics in quite a while, and I have to say that I did notice a pretty big improvement in terms of packaging, customer service, and delivery times.
I ordered this set on it’s release day, and as you can imagine, this meant that the store was inundated with orders, which in turn, lead to delays.
Even though this isn’t an ideal situation for a lipstick addict like myself, I was pretty impressed it was explained in detail by customer service in an email, so I was able to keep calm and carry on.
The outer packaging for this collection is also pretty spiffy and well thought out which immensely pleases the portion of my brain that loves a good ‘aesthetic Instagram’.
I must admit, when I saw the packaging of the actual lipsticks online, I was quite sceptical as in my opinion, it does look a little cheap at first glance.
However, I’m happy to report that in person, they actually look and feel quite high end. They’re nicely weighted and feel quite expensive (probably because they ARE expensive).
The cap also feels very secure, which means that no ‘wawawawawa liPStiCk iN My vAleNTIn0 wHIte bAg’ situations are to be had here.
As for the formula, I am also rather pleased.
To me, they feel like the child of a MAC matte lipstick, and a Colourpop lux lipstick. They have extremely high pigmentation and feel uber lightweight like Colourpop, but they have a beautiful soft matte finish like the cult favourite MAC lippies.
I have yet to wear any of them for a full day, but I imagine they’d be pretty long wearing as far as traditional lipsticks go.
Instead of showing you traditional arm swatches, this time I decided to try my hand at doing some lip swatches, and in the process of doing so, I learned that I am not talented enough to do very good lip swatches. Don’t say you haven’t been warned.
For reference, my foundation shades are:
MAC: NC15-NC20
Fenty Beauty: 120-130
Colourpop: Light 45
Nars: Gobi-Deauville
Rumour
Kylie describes Rumour as a ‘deep plum’.
On me, it basically looks brown with a slightly red undertone.
This is one that I’d definitely recommend using a lip liner with, as the formula made it a little tricky to get a perfectly crisp line.
Similar colours: the closest thing I have to this in my collection is Rimmel’s 107, but it’s definitely much less brown than Rumour.
August
Kylie describes August as a ‘soft pale nude’.
This is definitely a favourite of mine from the collection. It’s quite a pale nude (even for me), but the peachy undertone eliminates the ‘ill’ look that some others give me. Snaps for you Kylie.
Similar colours: To me, this is MAC Blankety’s warmer, matte sister.
Rager
Kylie describes Rager as a ‘bright coral’.
I on the other hand, would say that this is a watermelon style red with a bright pink undertone.
This is hands down the most unique colour in the collection, and I own ZERO lipsticks that are anything like this.
Definitely a winner!
Birthday Behaviour
Kylie describes Birthday Behaviour as a ‘deepened cherry’.
I would agree.
While this is probably the least unique of all the colours, it’s probably the one that I will end up wearing the most often. I love a good red lipstick, and this one is fantabulous.
Similar colours: MAC Russian Red, Fenty Beauty Uncensored, and Colourpop Creeper.
Glam
Kylie describes Glam as a ‘bright pink’.
I’d say that even though there are a million pinks like this on the market, I don’t actually own any that look like this.
In terms of depth, it’s quite mid toned, but the undertone to me is quite ‘softly warm’ which I find rather flattering.
Similar colours: MAC Brave is Glam’s cool toned sister.
Flirtini
Kylie describes Flirtini as a ‘true pink’.
If you’re fair like me, Flirtini is definitely quite a ‘sweet’ pink with a neutral undertone. If you have deeper skin though, I feel like this would make a great pinky nude.
Again, this is nothing the world hasn’t seen before, but it’s definitely cute, and I don’t own anything like it.
Similar colours: Flirtini is about halfway between MAC Blankety and Velvet Teddy.
And there you have it.
Until next time, ;).
