In case you’re living under a rock, Little Mix have started teasing their new album Glory Days and while I’m writing this, their first single ‘Shout out to my Ex’ has just hit number one. Congrats girls!
Yesterday, the music video for this cracker of a tune was released and through the entire thing, I could not stop staring at the makeup and wanted to recreate it.
The look was created by makeup artist Adam Burrell who has more talent in his little finger than I will ever have, and he kindly created a tutorial in collaboration with The Book Channel and Lou Teasdale. But very unfortunately for those of us in Australia, the video can’t be viewed for copyright reasons.
So I thought, what better thing to do with my day off than study the music video, formulate a plan, and recreate Perrie’s makeup look?
I would describe the look as a glamorous festival inspired smokey eye with a haze of dusty rose which is very on trend at the moment. What makes it even greater is that it isn’t a seasonal look- those in the northern hemisphere would adore it in Autumn while it takes us southern hemisphere folk through Spring and Summer.
The first step I took because I’m secretly Caspar the friendly ghost, was to slap on some fake tan. They always have an amazing, healthy glow and bronzed skin really enhances the tone of this look. However, if you don’t feel comfortable doing this or don’t think it’s necessary, by all means skip it- every skin tone is absolutely stunning!
Today I used my favourite Le Tan Express Mousse with the Le Tan Premium Mitt. It’s super easy to apply and blend- just buff it on in circular motions, leave it for 1-2 hours, then rinse off and you’ll have that “just came back from The Maldives” look for at least 7 days.
To lock in moisture, smooth imperfections and keep the makeup on all day, always start with a primer. I used a pea sized amount of Revlon’s Photoready Perfecting Primer on my t zone to smooth over pores and enhance the airbrushed finish I was going for. I let this set for about five minutes before moving on, as I find when I don’t do this, my foundation slips straight off.
Speaking of foundation, today I used about two pumps of my holy grail, Nars Sheer Glow (I’m in the shade Deauville for reference) and blended it in with the Zoeva 102 Silk Finish Brush. I then left this alone and allowed it to set while I worked on the eyes.
All of the Little Mix girls have amazing bold brows and quite frankly, mine don’t exist without A LOT of help.
I started out by defining the shape with my Mac Brow Duo in Brunette. I used Coquette (the lighter shade) on the Zoeva 317 Wing Liner brush through the front half of my brows to define the shape and fill in any sparse areas. I then used Brun (the darker shade) through the arch and tail to intensify and define the outer half.
To make the brows extra fleeky, I brushed on a bit of Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in Dark Brown. Using any kind of brow gel will obviously help to keep them in place, but it also draws the brow hairs forward, making them look a heck of a lot more natural.
Tip: Even if you are recreating someone’s makeup look, ALWAYS work with your natural brow shape- this will be the most flattering shape on you.
Now to the fun part: the eyeshadow of dreams!
While the eyeshadow looked quite different throughout the video, I’ve concluded that it’s a mixture of warm browns, pinks and a tiny bit of plum. The shape is a balance between winged and slightly round, but overall it’s very hazy and soft while the eyes are open.
The above picture shows the shape of the shadow on my eyes so hopefully this will help explain the placement. But do keep in mind that everyone’s eyes are different, so experiment to see what kind of shape is most flattering for you.
For this look I decided to use the one and only Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette. If you’re looking to invest in a single, good quality palette, this is definitely the one for you. If you’re someone with blue eyes, this palette is incredible for you in particular, as the warm orange tones really help to make those peepers pop.
I started out by sweeping white chocolate over my entire lid, brow bone and inner corner with the Zoeva 227 Luxe Soft Definer. This helps to even out the tone of your lids, prime for all of the other colours, and helps everything to blend seamlessly.
I then took Marzipan, a rose golden shimmery shade, (second in the centre) all over the lid with a flat shader brush and blended with my finger. With the 227, I took Salted Caramel- a warm matte orange/brown- through my crease.
On the Zoeva 231 Luxe Petit Crease brush, I took Milk Chocolate through the outer half of the crease, then extended it outwards and brought it down to meet my lash line to create a winged shape. I then blended with the 227. To intensify this, I repeated the process with Semi Sweet- a darker matte brown- keeping the colour more concentrated in the outer v.
If you’re not one for pink shadow, you could leave it here, but to add the rose coloured haze, I used Strawberry bon bon -a matte baby pink- over the top of Mazipan. I then took a small amount Black Forest Truffle – a shimmery plum- through the outer v.
Under my eyes went a mixture of semi sweet and milk chocolate, and to enhance the rose, I took Strawberry Bon Bon on the 227 and blended out the edges of the entire eye.
To give off a smokey vibe and add the drama that Perrie had, I used the Estee Lauder Pure Color Intense Kajal Eyeliner in 01 Blackened Black in my waterline, tightline, and smudged into my top lash line.
If you have trouble tightlining, just remember to take your time and stay calm. It can be a little tricky but gently hold up your lashes and it should be a little easier.
Before moving onto the lashes, I used my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla under my eyes, around my nose, between my brows and on my chin to highlight, and blended this in with the Zoeva 142 Concealer Buffer.
To start off the heavy lash look, I used the Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara on my top and bottom lashes. Perrie’s lashes were very voluminous but natural and wispy in this look, so try and avoid using anything too heavy or spidery.
For lashes I used my trusty Mac 36‘s. These are natural and wispy and are shorter in the centre and longer at the edges. These lashes are unnecessarily expensive, but this shape will elongate the eye and enhance the winged look that Perrie had.
As for applying them, all I can say is practice makes perfect. Be patient and practice placing them on without any glue to get a feel for them.
Next came the all important stars. Adam used glitter stars on Perrie which I couldn’t come across anywhere, so I made do and drew them on with my trusty Rimmel Scandaleyes Thick and Thin Liquid Eyeliner. From afar, you can’t even tell the difference!
If you are doing this, make sure that you lightly set the area with powder first to avoid the liner turning grey or bleeding with the concealer. I used Rimmel’s Silky Loose Face Powder over my whole face on a Napoleon Perdis Finishing Powder Brush.
After powder, I ‘brontoured’ with Beach Bronze from the Tanya Burr Rosy Flush Cheek Palette and the same Napoleon Perdis brush. This technique adds shape to the face while livening up the skin and creating a healthy, bronze glow.
I then applied Pretty Peony blush to the apples of my cheeks using the Zoeva 127 Luxe Sheer Cheek brush.
In the music video, the girls wore glitter on their cheekbones, but to make this slightly more wearable, I just went ham on the highlighter and used a new combination which I highly recommend to anyone who wants that GLOW.
I started out by taking a tiny amount of the Nars Illuminator in Copacabana and applying it to the tops of my cheekbones, down my nose, above my brows and on my cupid’s bow using my ring finger to tap it in.
To intensify my cheekbones, I added a little Mac Mineralise Skin Finish in Soft and Gentle.
And finally, for that incredible blush nude lip, I lined and filled in my lips with Mac’s Lip Pencil in the colour Soar. I then added a small amount of Rimmel Kate Moss Lasting Finish Lipstick in the colour 03 to the centre. To give a slightly more matte finish I blotted with a tissue, then added a little more and blotted again. Blotting and reapplying is the best trick for getting your lipstick to last all day- yay for tissues!
And there we have it!
I hope this helped you to in some way or at least gave you some form of entertainment.
Once again, a huge congrats to the girls for hitting number 1, and to Adam for creating this amazing look.
Bye for now,
Claire.
